The Dewalt DCK283D2 MAX XR Lithium Ion Brushless Compact Drill and Driver set is, at the time of this review (Aug 9, 2016) the latest and greatest iteration of Dewalt's 20V Compact Drill and Impact Driver. I bought them as an upgrade for the older 18V Dewalt tools (hammer drill, compact drill, and circular saw) which I have owned for almost a decade. All I can say is HOLY COW THESE ARE AMAZING!

It's stunning how far technology has come. Compared to my older 18V tools--which were very good--these are considerably smaller, lighter, and more powerful, plus just as durable or more so! Seriously, I should have upgraded sooner. Of course, it's probably a good thing I waited, as these newest versions (DCD791 Compact Drill and DCF887 Impact Driver) have the advantage of better illumination options (brighter LEDs, with a 20 second standard shut off delay after activation, as well as a 20-minute illumination option). Far from a gimmick, the brightness and placement of these lights is a major convenience any time you have to drive a fastener from inside a dark cabinet or other confined/poorly lit space.

Dewalt also makes a hammer drill version of their compact drill, as well as a full size regular and full size hammer drill. I decided that if I ever need the power of a hammer drill, I will invest in the full-size hammer drill. But for 95% of all things I do or make with my tools, this DCD791 Compact Drill has PLENTY of power, and the light weight and slim form factor are amazing. I can get into small spaces much easier, and support the tool for much longer without fatigue. Need to drive a 2-1/4" hole-saw through 3/4" plywood? No problem! I'm totally thrilled with this compact drill's performance.

The Impact Driver is equally exciting. Even more compact than the drill, it offers a nearly ideal balance between brute power (especially on setting 3) and delicate driving tasks (settings 2 or 1). Thanks to the reduced speed as well as reduced torque on setting 1, I am comfortable driving even relatively delicate #6 and #4 screws into wood with it. And on setting 2, it drives #8 1-1/2" screws very quickly, with the impact function kicking in just as the head of the fastener begins to seat. Perfect! I've driven a few hundred screws with it now--about four times faster than I can drive them with my old 12V Bosch driver--and not one seated too deeply or tore out. 90% of the time I leave it on setting 2 and the sensitivity of the trigger gives me enough control to drive fasteners anywhere from reassuringly slow to blazingly fast. As I previously alluded, I also find that the level of control with an impact driver is markedly better (compared to a standard cordless driver) when seating fasteners flush. The ratchet provides audible and palpable feedback at the moment the fastner is beginning to seat and tighten, making it a lot easier to avoid over-driving the fastener below the surface of your material.

A couple of things to know about these 20V tools.... First, 20V is the max operating voltage; these are technically 18V tools, so the 20V claim is a bit of a marketing gimmick. What makes them "more powerful" is not the voltage but the fact that they use better parts/components than the 18V tool line that Dewalt also still sells. At the same time, they are also more compact than most equivalent tools in the 18V line. The chief advantage over the older 18V tools is the use of Lithium Ion (memory-less) batteries. My older 18V batteries HAD to be fully discharged and recharged at least once every month or they would go bad alarmingly quickly. Since I'm the kind of guy who tends to tackle a nine-month boat-building project, and then take a few months off before I start something else, this meant I kept finding myself needing to buy expensive replacement batteries. After doing that twice--and spending WAY too many years juggling four half-dead batteries between my tools and two charging stations--I finally upgraded to this newer 20V system. WOW... the batteries are so much lighter, smaller, and more powerful... and they don't seem to discharge (let alone go bad) at all, even if left unattended and uncharged for more than a month. This is a major improvement over the NiCad 18V batteries, which would need to be replaced or would barely hold a charge if neglected to that same extent. Also, just for reference, I recently built a rolling kitchen island for my wife (22" x 36" x 35-1/4"), plus four small portable tool-organizer cabinets (11" x 11" x 18") over the past two weeks using this drill and driver. At present, I still have not recharged anything. The impact driver battery still shows a full three bars of power and the drill battery shows two bars of power when I press the battery gauge. So not only do they hold a charge well, but they obviously operate quite efficiently. I've been doing a lot of drilling and fastening on these projects, including making a few cutouts for power cords with a 2" and a 1-1/4" hole-saw. I've also dropped them three times already from approximately 3' height--hard enough to bounce them--but the plastic and rubber cladding are so durable there is no sign of any scuff or crack. This is the familiar DeWalt build quality that I've come to know and love!

If you are still using the older 18V tools with batteries that don't hold a charge like they used to, or if you're still using corded tools, or if you don't have a drill/driver and think you might like one, do yourself a favor and BUY THIS SET. It is outstanding, and it will do 95% of what most DIY'ers need to do with these tools. The only reason to look at the full size or hammer drill versions is if you're pretty certain you will need to drill into stone, brick, or masonry at some point (and more than once or twice). In that case, a hammer drill is pretty much a necessity and will save you considerable effort.

[UPDATE 8-20-2016: Today my drill's battery dropped to one bar for the first time since I began using this set. So that means the 2Ah battery lasted approximately three weeks, during which time I built a rolling kitchen island, three mini tool-organizer cabinets, a rack for organizing my clamps, a large drawer, and a few miscellaneous small tool holders, plus drilled over a dozen holes through 3/4" plywood with hole saws ranging from 1-1/4 to 2-1/4" diameter. That's a LOT of drilling and driving, and I'm sure I could have kept going for awhile since it just dropped from two to one bar today. The impact driver currently still has two of three bars when I check the battery gauge, so it has yet to see the charger. This is such a great set. So lightweight and compact, yet very powerful. Not once have these tools bogged down or even slowed in operation. Awesome.]

I got these because I do a lot of utility work in technical theater...everything from repairing props to large set pieces, set construction and repair, and stage lighting maintenance...and I got tired of waiting for the screw gun and drill that we already owned to be available (and then hoping there was still enough life left in the battery to do it). In the year or so that I've had these, the one time they let me down was removing bolts that ended up requiring penetrating oil, a top-end wrench, and a 30" breaker bar to get loose (and even then, it took a guy who has another 30lbs of body weight to put enough torque on them to get them loose). Well worth the money and my only regret is that I didn't buy them sooner.

I'm an HVAC TECH and these tools are compact enough to go where I go and rugged enough to withstand the punishment I put them through.

Prior to this product I was always settling for the cheap route and buying chicago electric drills. Not anymore! Got this kit, and promptly retired my last harbor freight special into the dumpster! Had it for over 4 months now, drill does a great job for anything around the house. It's very handy to have it in what is a sturdy bag with a good functioning zipper. Even enough room left in bag to put in some drill bit sets to keep it all together. For the price it came at, I'm satisfied!

I love, love, love my new De Walt Combo Drill Kit! I have already fixed the bottom stair step, repaired the broken rake, finished replacing new spindles on the porch... you get the idea. So many projects! So little time. I 100% recommend this product. The batteries hold the charge (it comes with two in case your project is a big one) The big drill has the power to get through hard, thick, wood with long screws. The small drill is a handy size for tight places. Both drills are light enough to handle for the long jobs.

You can always expect to get high quality tools when you buy Dewalt. They are extremely reliable…so that’s what I like to buy. These were no exceptions. What else can I say? Everyone I know that chooses Dewalt tools are very happy with them. They are yellow, which makes them easy to find if you misplace one, they are powerful, and they seem to last forever. I like ‘em, and I think you will too. Good luck!

I'm a DeWalt girl from the get go and wanted to upgrade my 12v to a 20v. After much research and reviews I went with this DeWalt 20v drill being that it had the power I needed for my builds while advertised to be light weight. I'm ALWAYS happy with DeWalt but have wished it to be lighter. A bit bummed that not all chargers are alike and work together.. I had to return the bigger one I'd bought and went with a slimmed down version of a lithium battery that made me happy but still too heavy. The light's power is good but the location doesn't work for me. Still prefer it at the point of contact NOT having to fuss if it's lined up or not or if it's blocked with shadows. Think DeWalt could of cut back on the weight considering what their full size power cord weighs. Still DeWalt ALWAYS a good drill over Makita and the rest. Thanks ??

3.0 out of 5 stars AFTER USING THE DRILL FOR A PROJECT IT NO LONGER HELD THE BITS...OTHERS HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT
Reviewed in the United States ???? on March 12, 2019
Style: Impact Driver/Drill Combo OnlyVerified Purchase
I purchased this set after a neighbor let me borrow his while I was putting up a new fence. I noticed a difference in the way it worked but it worked well. I then found out that his set was brushless. I hadn't noticed that before I got mine. After using my set to finish the fence......drilling about 100 pilot holes.......the chuck was opening up and the bit would fall out. I would tighten it as much as I could and it would happen again. I put in a bit, tightened it and held it in the air to run it and it would happen. So it wasn't doing it only when trying to drill a hole. This probably started within 30 days of my purchasing it but I neglected to look into it because I got so busy trying to get other things done before winter set in. Then I needed to drill a couple of holes inside the house and couldn't use this drill because it wouldn't hold the bit! I was so angry! This set isn't cheap by any means. I recently found out that it is the low end of the DeWalt drills though. Great. I wrote to DeWalt and told them my situation. There is a 3-year warranty and it was possible I could have it repaired under that. A label was sent to me and off it went. At first they thought I wasn't tightening the chuck enough. Um.....I was using it and it worked fine......until it didn't!! I told them it wasn't me.....it was the chuck on the drill that was the problem. They changed it and so far it's working......but I haven't had to do a job with it yet. I should get a board and drill a few dozen holes to see if it keeps working. I also found a great deal on a bare brushless drill and bought that. If this one acts up again and it's past the warranty.....it's going in the trash. My advice? If you're going to invest in a DeWalt drill........go with the brushless. I'm just glad that I contacted DeWalt and the repair guy was nice enough to call......and that he listened when I told him it was the drill that had the problem ....not me!! When others are having the same problem it is obviously a design flaw. I do have to thank DeWalt, though, for responding to my email quickly and sending me the label to send it for repair. If they hadn't I think my review would have sounded much different!! They stood behind their product and took care of the problem. Thanks again!

Honestly, spend the extra money on a real Dewalt kit from a store (home depot, etc) or buy it right from Dewalt.
This purchase is a hit and miss! Its a lottery, a real gamble, if you will. Some people come out with excellent help, excellent customer service for poor products, while others come out with a quality working drill. I took my chances,, rolled the dice and I got neither. Like some other reviews I read; I got a bad drill. I lost this lottery and the money with it.
Every use it smells like the gears are burning and the back sparks. The bits keep falling out of the tip when the drill stops, and the torque isn't right. Both the drills I purchased couldn't even drive a 1in screw through the 1/2in finished face plate for kitchen drawers. We aren't even using a hard or soft wood - its like a strong particle board. Neither drill has enough power and this job is too much for them, which blows my mind.
I could've had better luck for half the price on Craigslist, maybe second hand cap tools from another vendor would do the trick.
Sure, go ahead and gamble on this purchase. If it works out it's excellent product for a great price (some of the reviews are written by those "lottery" winners).
If it doesn't work out, you'll leave with a nice tool bag. I purchased the drill bits amd am happy with that purchase.
BUYERS BEWARE, THIS IS A GAMBLER'S PURCHASE.

I purchased this kit a few months ago because my previous Bosch driver finally gave out after 6 years of abuse. I have used it occasionally off and on and enjoyed the ability of the impact driver to unstick rusted bolts. Recently I put it to the test with 2 inch deck screws on a project. I could only get 90 screws in before the battery gave out on two separate occasions with a full charge to start. The voltage is fine for torque but just not enough amps to continue working without a recharge. Its good for small jobs occasionally but if you want something that has enough power to last more than 30 min on a job pick something else.

I think Dewalt DCK28D2 has a quality control issue. I barely use this drill and I can honestly said I used it three times. Today, 03/03/2018, I use it to drill a screw out of the CRV 2011 rotor and the drill bit stuck and cannot be loosen off. No matter what I did, it just won't loosen up. So as the last resort, I use a big plier to hold the clutch so I can spin it loose. Well, it works, the drill bit is out, but now it stuck on the open wide position and will not allow me to put another bit on...as it won't tighten. The chuck is broken or stuck!

I love the size and how it feel in my hand but I think this new DCD791 20V MAX* XR Lithium Ion Compact Brushless 1/2" Drill/Driver is faulty and I saw peoples on youtube also have issue with it. I don't think it is a user's fault as I use older DEWALT drill for years and it still working just fine. In fact, I ended up using the old DEWALT drill to complete the job (yes, the old battery only lasts like 15 mins but that is good enough to get the job done).

See the attached photo. I now have a useless drill that stuck on the open position.

I am a hardwood flooring installer and i expect alot of my tools. I use impact drivers when i screw down subfloor. This driver only lasts about 5 minutes on the 1.3 ah batteries. I went out and bought a 3 ah battery which helped considerably. Another problem i have noticed with the driver is heat. If i am using it to screw down a subfloor, it gets so hot that i cant use it any more. The drill has a cheap chuck that is constantly loosening up. This makes it useless to me. Lastly, this kit is $40.00 less at a local retailer. I should have done my research and got the better kit that was the same price as this kit at said retailer. In the end, I sold the kit to one of my employees, and bought a brushless makita set ($120.00 more than this kit). The difference is night and day. The 4ah makita batteries charge in about 40 minutes which is how long it takes to charge the 1.3 ah dewalt batteries.

The impact driver is nice, but not as strong as my 18v Makita even though this is a 20v tool.

Batteries seem to drain too fast, again, Im comparing this to my other tool set.

The drill started sparking inside just after a few uses and it stoped working, It worked again after a few seconds and it would spark and stop working again.

After using these tools for a week they had to go back, replacing them with more expensive Makita.

I'm an industrial electrician and I needed to just overhaul my power tools and get a new set. Because I dont want to buy different sets/batteries I wanted to choose a brand and stick with it for my power tool needs, and of course it came down to going either Dewalt or Milwaukee. Alot of guys around me went Milwaukee, but the way they hyped it up I felt they went Milwaukee just so they could say they use Milwaukee.... like some kind of status thing since the line is more expensive.

After hours and hours of research, videos, and comparisons I chose to go Dewalt. I bought this Combo set with impact and drill along with the 5-AH combo battery set. This was going to be my compact set and I had every intention of purchasing the larger heavy duty hammer drill and impacts that Dewalt carries......until my set arrived.

Right out of the box, I noticed the chuck on the impact had a bad wobble, as if it had sustained a really hard drop and was permanently misaligned. The toggle between forward/reverse/locked also felt extremely "china made", like cheap plastic that seemed as if the selector "click" would be gone within the year.

In my trade, self tappers and drilling into hardened steel is the norm. It goes without saying that the pressure and force used requires total stability. The wobble on the impact was so bad, a self tapping hex head inside of my 1/4 driver actually flew right out just by pressing the trigger while holding it all vertical. (A wobble this bad makes it unusable in work application)

I returned that set for an exact replacement figuring that with the DEWALT name there is no way that standard of quality could be normal and something HAD to be wrong or damaged with the set I got.....

I was wrong....

My new set arrived and just like the first, that same chuck/arbor misaligned wobble was there but it was just a little less. I have a job to do and cant wait any longer so I packed it all up and used the impact and drill today.

After the very first self tapper I ran, the chuck wobble on the impact driver became just as extreme as my first set. I use a magnetic driver and it barely holds the screw when spinning just in air, and when actually trying to drive it into steel this wobble sends the screw flying before there is even an indent in the metal surface. The drill wobble was definitely less, but still there and made just driving pilot holes a pain to stay on target.

Literally not even 2 hours using the impact driver and it earned the nickname "Mr. Wobbles" with the journeyman I was working next to.

Needless to say I'm not happy and I cant even believe I'm dealing with these problems from the Dewalt brand. Milwaukee impact drivers and drills didn't "impress" me, but I NEVER got let down with their performance. Experiencing chuck wobble is something I would expect from Walmart and Harbor Freight brands, and never even dreamed of thinking I would deal with that using Dewalt.

Long post, but I can say without a doubt I totally regret going Dewalt and now Have to deal with the pain of sending ANOTHER tool set back along with the battery set so I can buy Milwaukee replacements.

1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe wish I had just gone to Harbor Freight...

I've been a DeWalt fan for a long time, but this order has changed my mind. The impact driver is great -- a real work horse-- and that's what I gave two stars. The drill was, too, for about a year. Then it stopped drilling, with a grinding, gear-slipping, sound. But I had a three-year warranty. Yay! So I sent it via UPS to the repair shop halfway across the state, and waited. And waited... it's been there three months, and is still there waiting for parts. She did say that parts for just came in for a tool that had been there since May 2022, but mine shouldn't take that long. How long, I asked. No idea she said.

So if I had bought a Bauer 20v drill at Harbor freight for $50 and added a two-year warranty, i would just get a replacement, from my local store, if it failed.

I need a drill, so that's kind of the direction I'm headed now.

UPDATE: It's now the first third of February, and my repair has been waiting for a part since at latest the middle of December. About to pull the trigger on the Hercules 20V Brushless Cordless 1/2 in. Compact Hammer Drill/Driver, with a five-year, in-stock in-store replacement.

1.0 out of 5 stars Impact driver great. Drill/driver junk.

If you're like me, you read the negative critiques first since they are usually the most objective. Hopefully, my review will help you avoid at least some of the hassle with US-designed/off-shore-built cordless technology.

After having avoided it for so many years, I finally got sucked into the DeWalt hype. Don't get me wrong: some DeWalt tools are very good. My usual cordless tool-of-choice is Ryobi. But, Ryobi drills are mostly junk and Black & Decker drills are almost the same as DeWalt. That said, I have yet to see an unreliable impact driver from any cordless manufacturer. The single star rating here reflects my contempt for the sum of the kit's parts, not its individual components.. The redeeming qualities of this kit are the bag, the charger and the impact driver. (I've never been impressed with Lithium Ion batteries with less than 4 amp hour capacity).

So, I sent this kit back rather than screw around with a replacement because, judging from various reviews, too many replacement products suffered from the same idiotic problem: these drills do NOT hold a bit. Regardless of what directions you follow, (and there are plenty of 'fix-it' directives out there), this 771 drill will NOT hold a bit. My most recent experience occurred while drilling holes for a dock cleat: during the exit, the drill bit came loose for no apparent reason and fell into three feet of water!! (I used a magnet to retrieve the bit).

Don't bother commenting on how this problem could have been fixed or what I should've done differently. I'm not listening anymore. This is a drill. This drill has a chuck like a million other drills. The chuck is supposed to hold a drill bit securely like any normal drill. The chuck is not supposed to let go of the drill bit until I release it. Ergo, this drill is as useless as Black & Decker and Ryobi since neither of them can be counted on to hold a bit securely for very long either. (I really did think the problem was with ME because of the same malfunction with different manufacturers. . . but, for once in my life, I am not the problem:-) So, I've concluded that these manufacturers apparently don't use their own drills. .

My advice to anyone looking for a quality drill/driver is to avoid Black & Decker, Ryobi and DeWalt drill/drivers. Their other products have worked well for me but not the drill/drivers.

Next stop: Porter Cable. If PC isn't any better, maybe Makita. Otherwise, corded drills have always held bits reliably.
___________________

Update 082017: I recently tried Porter Cable drills and found them not any better at holding drill bits reliably: some do, some don't just like the other Stanley products (DeWalt & Black and Decker). What I DID find is that the drill (DDB181) in the Bosch CLLPK232A-181 seems to hold drill bits securely so far. I'll keep the Bosch kit.

That said, all of the impact drivers I've tried from Stanley products and Ryobi vary in decibels but perform very well. Your mileage may vary but it's pretty sad that anyone would have to look so hard for a decent drill. I don't recall NiCad drills being this unreliable. . .or cheaply made.

1.0 out of 5 stars Failed after less than 4 hours of use, $79 fee to repair under warranty!

I've loved the Dewalt compact driver/drill form....small, ergonic, light, and relatively powerful. I was a bit disappointed on the powerful part, as my Bosch compact drill/drivers seem to pack as much power, in a smaller form factor. The batteries for these tools don't seem to hold a charge very long, and drain quickly during use. Sadly, my Dewalt compact driver/drill failed after only a few hours of use. Either the clutch is broken, or the plastic gears are stripped. I've had plastic gear failure before with a much older Dewalt cordless drill, so I should have known better than to buy one again.

SERVICE: I contacted Dewalt online, and after a few emails back and forth, and after providing date codes, proof of purchase, a QR code, shipping address, etc., the customer service agent told me to CALL a service center in California. I called them, and they said to initiate a warranty repair online. I started one, and was SHOCKED to see that Dewalt charges a $79.00 fee for a Factory overhaul cost (see attached screenshot) for an item supposedly covered under warranty. That's about the value of the tool, and it's not worth repairing, especially if it fails again after a few uses.

My recommendation? Stay FAR AWAY from all Dewalt cordless drills. JUST DON'T BUY THEM.

BTW, I've had good luck with their corded tools, including compound miter saws, circular saws, etc.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's catching on fire!!

I've had the drill for almost two years, and generally it's been pretty good. Good enough that I have repurchased the drill.

Bad enough that it's literally shooting flames out the back when using it now, so I had to repurchase it -- as it's clearly unsafe to use if it's on fire.

I have no idea if it's still under warranty, and there's no obvious way to contact Dewalt.

update: I was in contact back/forth with Dewalt for nearly a month. They asked for proof of purchase, and I sent that to them. Then provided me with a free label to ship them the drill. After they had the drill, they then told me it's no longer under warranty, but fortunately for them they now have any evidence of a class action lawsuit about their drills catching fire in their possession. They offered to "repair" it for nearly full cost of the drill. I'm not sure why they couldn't have simply told me they were wasting my time immediately after sending them my proof of purchase which is when they would have known the warranty was no longer valid.

Not sure what's wrong with mine. I came on here to buy a battery that can last more than 15 minutes only to find out if this Dewalt combo I bought should be lasting about 1 hour. Mine only lasts 15mins on battery. One of the batteries also won't charge. I'll see if I can get some way of reaching out to the manufacturer.

I’ve been a DeWalt customer for years, so I was pretty confident about buying a set of cordless drills to keep at my mom’s house for when I’m able to visit her and manage some projects around her home. However, when I finally had opportunity to use them, the trigger doesn’t engage the motor properly. The worst part? This is the second time it’s happened. These were replacements for the previous set I bought through Amazon— a set that had the exact same problem, right out of the box. I was able to return the first set because I was still within the window of time for replacement. Not so lucky this time. The replacements had the very same issue, as you can see from the video, but I didn’t test the replacements until after the deadline.

This trigger issue seems to be a recurring problem with DeWalt drills sold here. Again, buyer beware.

Amazon is selling a defective item. I called the representative within the return period. one of the representative had confirmed with the Dewalt Manufacture that I can return the item even thought it has been used. The item already return more than 30 days and I never received any refund. As today Sept 19, I called and spoke with one of the representative. She said there's no notes about the conversation between me and another representative. Then she offer me a partial refund which means half price that I had paid for OR contact the Dewalt Manufacture myself. left me with these two options. I request to have the item send back to me and I will pay the shipping fee in order to show the Dewalt Manufacture. The item is defective. She refused and hung up on me.

I was gifted a Dewalt drill,18 months later it stripped out. After giving them a $79 deposit to ship I was later informed it woudn't be covered. They could rebuid it for the $79 or I could go to Lowes for $99 and get a new drill with a new battery leaving me an extra one. I buy a new drill. Withing 45 days this drill is starting to act up. There isn't one department that can help you through100 percent of the process. I was told to call their service number...their service number said great you can go online to do a service repair slip at $79 deposit or call another number to get a packing slip. I tried the online repair request twice and both times couldn't process claim. Several calls later and no better off. I was even disconnected once and had to start over. I called Amazon who then asked for one more try at the Manufacturer. I agreed. She put my call over and the gentleman at the other end(Who I could barley understand) told me to ask Amazon for a full refund or he could get me over to a rebate center in which would take a lot longer.....WTH is wrong with big business today? Thank you Amazon for taking full control and standing behind your customers !

1.0 out of 5 stars Brand new: Non-working chuck, dead battery and still waiting for warranty replacement
Reviewed in the United States ???? on August 23, 2022
Style: Impact Driver/Drill Combo OnlyVerified Purchase
I've been using DeWalt power tools since they first appeared on the market. I bought this kit and was really pleased with it when it arrived. I did notice however that the chuck was slipping a lot, i.e., the bit would get stuck in the material being drilled not matter how tightly I turned the chuck. After about 8 uses, one of the batteries just went inoperable. It wouldn't charge - nothing. So I submitted a warranty replacement claim through the DeWalt website. Took one week for them to respond. After 5 weeks I got the replacement battery. I'm still waiting for the drill... I had to buy another drill - not a DeWalt! A Makita and I love it!
