Real Madrid champions of LaLiga for record 35th time

Monday

#1:Real Madrid champions of LaLiga for record 35th time

Real Madrid won the LaLiga title on Saturday after a 4-0 win over Espanyol gave them an insurmountable lead over Barcelona at the top of the table with four games to play.

Rodrygo's first-half double set the champions elect on their way to the title at the Santiago Bernabeu before Marco Asensio made it 3-0 soon after the break. Karim Benzema grabbed a fourth after coming on as a substitute amid jubilant scenes at the Bernabeu.

The league title is Madrid's second trophy of the 2021-22 season after winning the Spanish Supercopa in January. They will look to keep hopes of more silverware alive on Wednesday in their Champions League semifinal second leg with Manchester City, trailing 4-3.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti -- who returned to the club last summer for his second spell in charge -- becomes the first coach to win the title in Europe's "top five" leagues: Italy's Serie A, England's Premier League, France's Ligue 1, Germany's Bundesliga and now Spain's LaLiga.

Ancelotti said: "It's emotional. It's an achievement. The season we've had in the league has been spectacular, with a lot of consistency. It's thanks to the work of the players, and their commitment. Today we have to celebrate, I want to celebrate.

"It fills me with pride. I like what I do, and the five leagues [I've won] mean I've done quite well. I'm proud to be here and to win trophies for Real Madrid and I want to carry on winning trophies for Real Madrid."

Madrid have now won LaLiga a total of 35 times, the most of any Spanish club, ahead of Barcelona with 26. Four of those titles have come since 2010 -- in 2012, 2017, 2020 and now 2022, a period in which the club has also won four Champions League titles.

Ancelotti was appointed last June -- after predecessor Zinedine Zidane resigned -- and tasked with deposing last year's champions and local rivals Atletico Madrid.

The squad was strengthened by the signings of defender David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich and midfielder Eduardo Camavinga in a deadline-day deal with Rennes, while there were two significant departures, Raphael Varane joining Manchester United and captain Sergio Ramos moving to Paris Saint-Germain.

The team started the season strongly, propelled by the performances of strike duo Karim Benzema -- who has gone on to score 42 goals in all competitions, 26 of them in LaLiga -- and Vinicius Junior. As rivals Atletico and Barca struggled to find consistency, Madrid built up an imposing lead, and they have topped the table since November.

Madrid have rarely looked like being caught since, and have lost just three times in LaLiga: beaten at Espanyol in October and Getafe in January, as well as a 4-0 home defeat to Barcelona in March.

When they have come under pressure, Thibaut Courtois has starred in goal, keeping 14 clean sheets and conceding 29 goals, the second-lowest tally in the division behind Sevilla.

Madrid have managed to balance domestic duties with a Champions League run that has seen them eliminate PSG and Chelsea in the round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively. They will host City on Wednesday looking to book their fifth Champions League final place in the past decade.

President Florentino Perez was full of praise for Ancelotti, saying: "Maybe he didn't expect it, but when we called he said he'd come running. He's trained a lot of teams, he always says the difference here at Madrid is that the players are Madridistas, that's a plus.

"He has a lot of experience of managing squads and I think he's done very well. He identifies with Real Madrid, its values, and what it represents, that's important."

Browns believe David Bell possessed 'some of the best hands in the draft class'

#1:Browns believe David Bell possessed 'some of the best hands in the draft class'

Andrew Berry thinks the Browns might have drafted one of the most sure-handed receivers of the draft class Friday at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus.

David Bell was the Browns' final pick of Day 2 at 99th overall, and he could be a big one because of how reliable he proved to be across three seasons at Purdue. Bell had only 11 drops mixed with 232 receptions and had a drop rate of just 4.7 percent, one of the best in the nation.

When Bell can get his hands on a pass, he usually catches it. That's what stood out most to Berry and the Browns when they were evaluating him, and Berry, the Browns Executive Vice President and GM, certainly made it sound as though those skills could give Bell a big role in the offense as soon as the 2022 season begins.

"It probably starts really with just his hands," Berry said. "We thought he had some of the best hands in this draft class. He is also very savvy as a route runner, just very nuanced and polished and has the ability to separate."

Berry made it clear that he envisioned Bell as a player who can handle most snaps from the slot, where a big body, reliable hands and crisp route running is needed most. Bell fits the profile at 6-foot, 212-pounds and garnered plenty of experience at the position with the Boilermakers. He's capable of playing outside, too, although the Browns already have at least one player capable of filling that role with Amari Cooper.

Bell said he's studied Cooper since he was a college player in Alabama, and the two share similar traits as big receivers who have built their success on catching the football, avoiding drops and outmuscling defenders when the ball is in the air.

Cooper could be a great mentor for Bell, and it's possible that Bell is penciled in the spot behind Cooper on the depth chart if he performs well in training camp.

Trevor Bauer suspended for two seasons by MLB; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher to appeal ban

#1:Trevor Bauer suspended for two seasons by MLB; Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher to appeal ban

Major League Baseball announced a 324-game suspension for Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer on Friday, the equivalent of two full seasons and by far the most severe punishment handed out under the sport's domestic violence policy.

Bauer promptly released a statement announcing he was appealing the suspension, thus becoming the first player to contest punishment through MLB's domestic violence policy.

"In the strongest possible terms, I deny committing any violation of the league's domestic violence and sexual assault policy," Bauer's statement read. "I am appealing this action and expect to prevail. As we have throughout this process, my representatives and I respect the confidentiality of the proceedings."

Bauer, 31, was accused of sexual assault by a San Diego woman who requested a restraining order and essentially alleged that he took consensual rough sex too far over the course of two encounters last April and May. An L.A. judge denied the woman a permanent restraining order in August, and the L.A. County District Attorney's Office declined to file criminal charges in February. But MLB has the autonomy to suspend players without a criminal conviction, and spoke to other women who also said they had been assaulted by Bauer.

Hours after the suspension was announced, The Washington Post published an interview with a woman from Columbus, Ohio, who accused the pitcher of choking her unconscious without her consent dozens of times during their years-long sexual relationship. She is the third known woman to accuse Bauer of sexual assault. The Post reported that she spoke with MLB as part of its investigation into Bauer's conduct before the league issued its discipline. Bauer strongly denied those allegations through his social media accounts.

Bauer joined the Dodgers on a three-year, $102 million contract in February 2021, on the heels of winning the National League Cy Young Award during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. He spent the last 81 regular-season games on administrative leave, plus an additional 18 to begin the 2022 season. But his 324-game suspension doesn't begin until Friday, meaning he doesn't get credit for previous time served.

Bauer's suspension, if it holds through the appeal process, would last until the 19th game of the 2024 season, by which point his three-year contract with the Dodgers will have expired. The Dodgers would save the $28-plus million that remains on his contract in 2022 and the full $32 million on his contract in 2023. Bauer was immediately placed on the restricted list and can't be around the team, even with a grievance hearing pending. The Dodgers are not allowed to release Bauer until after his suspension ends.

MLB announced the suspension with a short statement that did not provide details of its findings, adding: "In accordance with the terms of the Policy, the Commissioner's Office will not issue any further statements at this point in time."

The Dodgers, who are home against the Detroit Tigers this weekend, released the following statement:

"Today we were informed that MLB has concluded its investigation into allegations that have been made against Trevor Bauer, and the Commissioner has issued his decision regarding discipline. The Dodgers organization takes all allegations of this nature very seriously and does not condone or excuse any acts of domestic violence or sexual assault. We've cooperated fully with MLB's investigation since it began, and we fully support MLB's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy, and the Commissioner's enforcement of the Policy. We understand that Trevor has the right to appeal the Commissioner's decision. Therefore, we will not comment further until the process is complete."

Bauer is the 16th player suspended since August 2015, when MLB and the MLB Players Association unveiled their joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy, which grants MLB commissioner Rob Manfred the autonomy to suspend players under "just cause." The prior suspensions -- not counting that of former reliever Felipe Vazquez, who is serving a jail sentence for sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl -- have ranged from 15 to 162 games and were the result of negotiated settlements in which players waived their right to appeal.

Bauer last pitched on June 28 of last year. The next day, a then-27-year-old woman filed a request for a domestic violence restraining order in which she detailed allegations that Bauer assaulted her over the course of two sexual encounters at his Pasadena, California, home in April and May. In her declaration, the woman -- whom ESPN has chosen not to name -- alleged that Bauer choked her unconscious on multiple occasions, repeatedly scratched and punched her throughout her body, sodomized her without consent and left her with injuries that warranted a trip to the emergency room.

Bauer and his attorneys, Jon Fetterolf and Rachel Luba, firmly denied the accusations throughout, calling them "fraudulent" and "baseless" in an initial statement.

Bauer was initially placed on administrative leave -- a means by which players are paid their full salaries but are not allowed around major league facilities while investigations are ongoing -- on July 2. Five days later, the Dodgers canceled Bauer's scheduled bobblehead night and removed his merchandise from its stores, stating that the team "did not feel it was appropriate while investigations continue."

At the conclusion of a four-day hearing on Aug. 19, L.A. Superior Court Judge Dianna Gould-Saltman dissolved the temporary restraining order, ruling that Bauer did not pose a continual threat to the woman and that her injuries were not the result of anything she verbally objected to before or during the encounter, pointing to texts from the woman in which she asked to be choked out.

The judge said the "injuries as shown in the photographs are terrible," but added: "If she set limits and he exceeded them, this case would've been clear. But she set limits without considering all the consequences, and respondent did not exceed limits that the petitioner set."

Days before the start of that hearing, The Post published a story about a second woman, from Ohio, who sought a temporary restraining order against Bauer in June 2020 and also accused him of assault. The woman dismissed the order six weeks later, after Bauer's attorneys threatened legal action, according to the report. The Post story included photographs showing injuries that were allegedly caused by Bauer, as well as threatening messages, including one in which Bauer allegedly wrote: "I don't feel like spending time in jail for killing someone. And that's what would happen if I saw you again."

Bauer's attorneys called the woman's allegations of physical abuse "categorically false" and questioned the validity of the photos and messages.

The Pasadena Police Department concluded its investigation of the San Diego woman's allegations against Bauer on Aug. 27, sending the case to the L.A. County District Attorney's Office, which spent the next five months reviewing the case before declaring on Feb. 8 that it would not pursue criminal charges. The District Attorney's Office considered and rejected charges of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and sodomy of an unconscious person during the first sexual encounter between Bauer and the woman on April 22 and domestic violence during the second sexual encounter on May 16.

As part of its declination, the District Attorney's Office wrote: "After a thorough review of all the available evidence, including the civil restraining order proceedings, witness statements and the physical evidence, the People are unable to prove the relevant charges beyond a reasonable doubt."

Bauer promptly released a seven-minute video on YouTube in which he outlined his version of events, at one point saying: "I never punched this woman in the face. I never punched her in the vagina. I never scratched her face. I never had anal sex with her, or sodomized her in any way. I never assaulted her in any way, at any time, and while we did have consensual rough sex, the disturbing acts and conduct that she described simply did not occur."

The woman, who provided photographs and medical records as part of her domestic violence restraining order declaration, claimed she woke up the morning after the second sexual encounter with two black eyes, a swollen jaw and cheekbones, dark red scratches on the right side of her face, bruised gums, a lump on the side of her head, a split upper lip, black bruising over the top of her vagina and multiple bruises on her right butt cheek.

Over the past two months, while MLB continued its investigation, Bauer's lawyers filed defamation lawsuits against two media companies, claiming that Deadspin knowingly published false information in its coverage of the sexual assault allegations and that The Athletic led "a campaign to maliciously target and harass" Bauer.

Bauer's lawyers also subpoenaed the Pasadena Police Department for missing phone records from the San Diego woman, claiming in a court filing that "the requested materials will further reveal Petitioner's plan to ruin Respondent's reputation and career and to earn a large paycheck by making false and misleading allegations in her Petition."

But Gould-Saltman ruled in an April 4 hearing that Bauer would not be privy to the phone records, stating that his attorneys did not file the proper motion and that she nonetheless would've been skeptical of an argument that the records would help them show the woman misled the legal process and must pay his attorneys' fees.

On Monday, Bauer's attorneys filed a defamation and tortious interference lawsuit against the woman in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The suit claims she "fabricated allegations of sexual assault," "pursued bogus criminal and civil actions," "made false and malicious statements" and "generated a media blitz based on her lies" in an effort to "destroy" Bauer's reputation, "garner attention for herself" and "extract millions of dollars."

Panthers trade up to select Ole Miss QB Matt Corral in third round of 2022 NFL Draft

#1:Panthers trade up to select Ole Miss QB Matt Corral in third round of 2022 NFL Draft

Carolina picked Corral with the No. 94 overall selection, which they got from the Patriots in exchange for the 137th overall pick (fourth round) and a 2023 third-round selection.

Trade talks surrounded Carolina all day Friday, as NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Bridget Condon all reported talks were ongoing with the Panthers and Cleveland Browns about quarterback Baker Mayfield. Instead, the Panthers swapped with the Pats and grabbed Corral.

A polarizing yet gifted quarterback, Corral's maturity has come under scrutiny during the pre-draft process but his dual-threat abilities en route to averaging an FBS-leading 384.3 yards of total offense per game can't be ignored.

Corral was the fourth quarterback selected in the draft, but he could very well have the best chance at a starting job. Sam Darnold is currently atop a shaky Carolina depth chart as head coach Matt Rhule continues to reach for a franchise quarterback heading into his third season at the Panthers helm.

Rhule clarified that Darnold remains atop said depth chart -- for now, at least.

"[Corral is] not walking in Day 1 as a starter," Rhule said Friday night, via The Athletic's Joe Person. "Sam [Darnold] is our starter."

The Ole Miss product spent two seasons as a full-time starter, surpassing the 3,300-yard passing mark in each campaign. He earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2021. In 2020, he led the FBS with 384.3 total yards per game (passing and rushing).

Ideal for the RPO game, Corral boasts a quick trigger and excellent athleticism. The 6-foot-1 QB is a bit undersized, but with a bulldog mentality, he fearlessly runs into harm's way to make plays. Corral owns the ability to avoid pressure in the pocket and escape to turn potential losses into positive gains.

There are durability concerns given his playing style and lighter frame. Notably, he suffered an ankle injury in the Sugar Bowl. X-rays on the injury were negative, but kept Corral from participating in much of the physical parts of the draft process.

Jets trade up to select Iowa State RB Breece Hall in Round 2 of 2022 NFL Draft

#1:Jets trade up to select Iowa State RB Breece Hall in Round 2 of 2022 NFL Draft

The best dual-threat back in the draft, Hall is the first running back off the board this year.

Hall has the skill set to be a premium all-around back. He's able to absorb hits and push forward for hard yards when needed, but he can break off a big play, too. His pass protection is solid and his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield is terrific.

Over three seasons at Iowa State, Hall racked up 3,941 yards rushing and 50 rushing touchdowns to go with 734 yards receiving on 82 receptions for six receiving scores. A first-team All-American in 2020 and 2021, Hall had 20 or more rushing TDs in each of those campaigns and ran for 1,400-plus yards in each season, too.

Not regarded for his speed, Hall still ran a 4.39 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Pairing that with a 5-foot-11, 217-pound frame, Hall is very much the prototype for today's NFL running back.

The Jets leaped ahead of the Houston Texans, who needed a young RB, to snag the top running back in the draft.

In New York, Hall pairs with 2021 fourth-rounder Michael Carter to form a dynamic young duo. Last year, the Jets' backfield was a turnstile due to injuries and ineffective play. Adding Hall brings a playmaker who should be an immediate security blanket for quarterback Zach Wilson.

"I got to watch his game a lot, just watch how he's a bruiser but he can also make you miss," Hall said regarding Carter during a post-draft news conference, per the official team transcript. "I think I can come in and compliment him really well. I can't wait to get in there and learn from him."

Last year, Wilson eschewed the easy completion to try to take shots. This offseason, the young signal-caller has promised to play more within Mike LaFleur's offense in Year 2. Hall should immediately help with that plan, given his ability to catch the ball.

Hall is a home run threat out of the backfield. Adding the dynamic running back to go along with first-round receiver Garrett Wilson and third-round tight end Jeremy Ruckert (No. 101), the Jets injected playmaking to the offense in the first three rounds of the draft.

Paris Saint-Germain held by Strasbourg despite Kylian Mbappe double

#1:Paris Saint-Germain held by Strasbourg despite Kylian Mbappe double

Kylian Mbappe scored a brace as newly-crowned Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain were held to a 3-3 draw at Strasbourg in a spectacular encounter on Friday.

PSG, who claimed a record-equalling 10th top-flight title last weekend, had to share the points after Anthony Caci's strike gave the hosts a last-gasp equaliser in stoppage time.

- ESPN+ viewers' guide: LaLiga, Bundesliga, MLS, FA Cup, more

Before that, Mbappe had scored his 23rd and 24th league goals. He cancelled out Kevin Gameiro's opener before extending his team's lead following Achraf Hakimi's second-half goal after a Marco Verratti own goal.

The result left PSG on 79 points from 35 games and fifth-placed Strasbourg on 57, two points behind third-placed Stade Rennais who occupy the last Champions League spot.

The hosts went ahead after only three minutes when Gameiro outpaced Presnel Kimpembe and beat Gianluigi Donnarumma with a low shot.

Adrien Thomasson found the back of the net again seven minutes later, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside.

In the 23rd minute, PSG levelled when Neymar found Mbappe with a delightful through ball, and the France forward concluded with a low shot that went between the legs of Matz Sels.

Mbappe then set up Hakimi for PSG's second goal in the 64th, four minutes before collecting a poor back pass from Alexander Djiku to make it 3-1 for the visitors.

Verratti gave the hosts a lifeline after 75 minutes when he deflected a corner kick into his own net.

Caci then gave Strasbourg a deserved point with a superb half volley two minutes into injury time.

Republicans have only themselves to blame for Madison Cawthorn

#1:Republicans have only themselves to blame for Madison Cawthorn

It was quite a month for young Madison Cawthorn.

The 26-year-old Republican congressman from North Carolina was caught bringing a loaded gun through airport security, his second such incident. Police released footage of him getting pulled over for driving with expired tags and being told to surrender his revoked license. The Washington Examiner reported allegations against him of insider trading. Politico published photos of him partying while wearing women’s lingerie. And a former congressional aide filed a workplace complaint against him.
Sign up for a weekly roundup of thought-provoking ideas and debates

Most public figures would call a stretch like that good reason to resign. Cawthorn might just call it “April.”

Earlier this year, Cawthorn called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a “thug” and his government “incredibly evil.” He alleged that his congressional colleagues engage in coke-fueled orgies. He committed the latest of many driving offenses (three court dates are pending). Earlier, four women accused him of sexual misconduct, in a BuzzFeed article; Cawthorn denied the allegations.

It has belatedly occurred to fellow Republicans that Cawthorn might be a liability. A GOP super PAC launched an ad last week saying Cawthorn tells “lies for the limelight.”
Follow Dana Milbank's opinionsFollow

But Cawthorn is a monster of Republicans’ own creation. His character flaws were fully displayed when he first ran for Congress in 2020: nods to white supremacists, extravagant lies, accusations of sexually predatory behavior, overt racism and a long list of driving offenses. Craven Republican leaders knew all that — and embraced him unreservedly.

Ousting Cawthorn in his May primary won’t cure this Republican illness; the North Carolina congressman is just a symptom. More than 50 QAnon believers have run for Congress as Republicans in 2022, the liberal watchdog Media Matters reports. Several who participated in the events of Jan. 6, 2021, have run for Congress. If Republicans succeed in taking the House in November, the new majority could make the current Congress — with Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, Paul Gosar, Lauren Boebert and the rest — look like Periclean Athens.

Cawthorn and the many rising oddballs and extremists are the inevitable result of Republican leaders’ choices: drawing increasingly uncompetitive districts, blessing unlimited dark money, exercising timid leadership, embracing disinformation, flirting with white nationalism, stoking conspiracies and undermining elections.

Cawthorn saw the GOP’s direction — and did what he had to do to be successful. “I absolutely will run for Congress,” then-19-year-old Cawthorn told the Daytona Beach News-Journal in 2015, a year after a spring-break car wreck in Florida left him in a wheelchair. And so he did, on the basis of audacious lies and winks at white nationalists.

In 2017, he posted photos on Instagram about a “bucket list” trip to Adolf Hitler’s retreat, the Eagle’s Nest. Cawthorn referred to Hitler as “the Führer” (though he did allow that Hitler was “evil”).

American Idol' winner Laine Hardy is accused of bugging an ex-girlfriend's dorm

#1:American Idol' winner Laine Hardy is accused of bugging an ex-girlfriend's dorm

American Idol" winner Laine Hardy was arrested Friday after being accused of putting a listening device in his ex-girlfriend's college dorm room, authorities said.

Hardy, 21, of Livingston, Louisiana, faces a felony charge of interception and disclosure of wire, electronic or oral communication, Louisiana State University spokesman Ernie Ballard said. Hardy surrendered to the LSU Police Department and was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

A spokesman for Hardy, who is not an LSU student, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Hardy's attorney, C. Frank Holthaus, said in a statement to USA Today that his client "has been and will continue to be completely cooperative with the Louisiana State University Police Department on this matter."

Holthaus did not immediately respond to a telephone message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

According to the arrest warrant, a woman and her roommate found a recording device inside their dorm room on April 6. The following day, they reported the finding to LSU police. The woman told police she found the device, which looked like a phone charger, under her futon, the warrant stated.

Joe Manchin calls EV tax credits “ludicrous” in Senate hearing

#1:Joe Manchin calls EV tax credits “ludicrous” in Senate hearing

Senator Joe Manchin called federal tax credits for electric vehicles "ludicrous" in a Senate hearing on Thursday. The West Virginia politician, who continues to make millions from the coal industry, has been a regular critic of subsidies for EVs, which have played a key role in the Democratic Party's plan to decarbonize the transport sector.

Since 2009, the US has used federal tax credits as a way to offset the higher price of EVs thanks to their battery packs.

Currently, the credit is for any plug-in vehicle (both battery EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs) with at least 5 kWh of battery capacity and ranges from $2,917 to $7,500, depending on the exact kWh total. But it's a credit, not a rebate, so to receive the full $7,500, an EV buyer has to have at least $7,500 in tax liability that year. The tax credit also sunsets once a car manufacturer has sold 200,000 plug-in vehicles, although, so far, only Tesla and General Motors have crossed that threshold.

Perhaps recognizing the rapidly diminishing opportunity to ameliorate the worst effects of climate change, House Democrats put together an expanded incentive package, which would increase the tax credit to as much as $12,500 based on a number of factors, including whether the EV was made by a unionized workforce.

But the Democratic Party has a razor-thin majority in the Senate, and passing more tax credits would be impossible without Manchin's vote.

Despite his claims to want to address climate change, this is not the first time Manchin has made clear his opposition to policies that would actually help. In November 2021, he called the EV incentives "wrong" and "not American." And in March 2022, he said he was "very reluctant to go down the path of electric vehicles" and lambasted the idea of the government spending money on infrastructure.

Manchin was questioning Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, urging his department to spend more money building more highways in West Virginia, when talk turned to EV tax credits.

"There's a waiting list for EVs right now with the fuel price at $4. But they still want us to throw [a] $5,000 or $7,000 or $12,000 credit to buy electric vehicles. It makes no sense to me whatsoever. When we can't produce enough product for the people that want it and we're still going to pay them to take it—it's absolutely ludicrous in my mind," Manchin said.
